An Organ Concert at Our Mother of Good Counsel in Los Feliz
What is this concert?
It is an organ recital at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, meant to give the church's organ a moment of its own. In the words of Jelil Romano, “It's a fine instrument with several pipes, and it's up in the front so people can see it and like that.”
The listing describes an evening of organ music on the Schoenstein Organ, with light refreshments in the plaza afterward. The concert is free, and a free-will offering will support the organ maintenance fund.
How did it get started?
The idea came from parishioner Lourdes Brent, who cares a great deal about the organ and donates to its upkeep. As Jelil explains, “She thought that we should have some recitals on it to get people involved.”
The church has held a couple of organ concerts before, though they have not been a regular series. This one is a one-time event, and it also marks the start of something larger: “It's the inauguration of a year of recitals and events for the organ.”

Who is behind it?
Father Max is part of it. Jelil describes him as someone “who's interested in music and wants to foster more interest in music,” and notes that he started a Vesper service to highlight music in the church.
Lourdes Brent, who works to keep the organ maintained and in service, is joined by friends of hers, including Gail. Jelil Romano is involved as well as the organist.
What will the evening be like?
Jelil hopes people will have “a beautiful time listening to beautiful music, meditative music, big music, and joyful music.”
He also sees it as a rare chance to hear the instrument outside of worship: “People really don't hear the organ enough except during a church service, so this will give them an opportunity to hear other things played on the organ.”
What makes this one different?
Timing. This concert falls in November, at the edge of the holiday season. “Thanksgiving is coming, Advent, Christmas,” Jelil says. “Hopefully, the music will reflect all of the holiday spirit that's coming upon us.”
How can neighbors support the organ?
Beyond attending, people can give to the organ fund if they wish. Jelil puts it simply: “Organs need a lot of upkeep. They don't just fix themselves on their own. It's like a car: every once in a while, it needs a tune-up, and parts need to be replaced.”
He also invites neighbors to visit the church any time to see the stained glass windows, hear the music, meet Father Max and get to know the parish. Updates are shared on the church's events page and on its Facebook and Instagram pages.
